THE DREAM
Our dream is to embrace the new changes that are sweeping SA horseracing and to contribute to a bold, exciting, and BIG new era for the sport. Despite the current turmoil, we believe that new operators, the possibility of direct horse exports to the EU, and the high value / low cost of doing business in SA all make the country a viable option to implement our new racing experience.
We plan to use South Africa as a base for a large-scale international racing business. Instead of SA being a tiny racing event market it can be the foundation for the largest new horseracing brand in the world, creating 1000s of jobs and revenue from across the globe.
Most NB, we believe this new dawn must include a radical shift for race meetings so that they attract thousands of new spectators who grow a love of horseracing.
THE RESEARCH
We researched what other international sporting codes, businesses, and bodies have done before and combined this with our racing event experience to create a horseracing model and business that could compete with the world’s biggest sporting and entertainment brands.
Sports that have successfully transitioned into the modern era, followed a formula. They all created a product that was easy to understand, unbelievably fun, fast paced and had huge exposure across multiple platforms. Sports that have successfully innovated include cricket (T20), rugby (Sevens) and darts (unbelievably!). As a result, these sports have an army of fans spread across the globe.
Ironically, these changes to each sport were often initially met with fierce resistance from their most loyal followers. Die-hard fans, who are the most desperate to see their sport grow, are often the last to accept fundamental changes to how things are done.
THE SOLUTION
Attracting a new market will not be achieved by adding elements to existing race meeting events. The format of the racing itself needs to be changed.
We must create a horseracing product that:
• Is easy to understand
• Takes less time to complete
• Includes mind-blowing entertainment
• Is team based
• Uses the latest data and technological innovations
• Can be broadcast on multiple digital platforms
• Is fan driven
• Is horse focused
• Appeals to sponsors
• Is family friendly
• Aligns with corporate entertainment/hospitality criteria
The answer is Triple 8 Racing. It is designed for rapid growth and large-scale exposure - a sport revolution and massive business innovation. A game changer. It radically changes the sport and is a live experience that appeals to all demographics and translates brilliantly onto multiple broadcast platforms.
TRIPLE 8 RACING
Eight teams of horses and jockeys’ race against each other with each race being a standard sprint of 800m. There are 8 races at each event. Points are allocated for each race and one team is crowned the winner at each event. A series of these racing events is combined to form a Triple 8 Racing series with one team being crowned the series winner. The jockey with the most points is crowned the champion jockey and the fastest horse is crowned the champion horse.
WHY TRIPLE 8 RACING?
Many Triple 8 Racing elements have been used or tested in racing before, but no company or brand has combined them together to create the powerful horseracing experience that is T8 Racing.
T8 Racing is designed to appeal to a mass market and is built to be experienced on the platforms they use. From a business perspective it entices non-racing people and entities to invest in the sport through team ownership, sponsorship, rights ownership, and corporate event hospitality.
T8 Racing appeals to a modern market because it is:
• Easy to understand
• A short format sporting experience (fast + furious!)
• Team based and uses a standardised sprint distance
• Built around the latest technological innovations which are used to record and broadcast across all platforms
• Fan driven
• Horse focused and always puts horse welfare first (e.g. whip free riding)
• Data and stats focused allowing for deep fan engagement
THE BUSINESS
Traditionally, horseracing events in South Africa focus on generating revenue through betting. This model is increasingly less viable as alternate betting platforms have been introduced and punters are able to bet on all other sports and betting products.
Horseracing must generate new revenue streams to grow. There must be a move to the current scenario of global sports businesses which make money from inter alia:
• Series sponsorship
• Team ownership
• Merchandising
• Events
• Hospitality
• Broadcasting rights
Triple 8 Racing makes these possible for two reasons; firstly, it will grow the live event and digital audiences for the sport dramatically, and secondly, its structure is built to accommodate team owners and sponsors. Together, these make the sport a viable attraction for all sport broadcasters.
